The Young Man

Cameron Wilson was born in Auckland in 1994, and as a one year old he was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer. Following prolonged treatment, he was in remission for ten years, but the cancer returned and he died in 2008 aged fourteen.

Cam was an unassuming young man with a wonderfully wicked, infectious grin. By the time he died he had become an accomplished musician particularly as a base guitarist. He played in both the 2007 & 2008 Secondary School Rock Quests in the middle of treatment with an intravenous drip in his arm. His band 'Without Conscious Thought' won three national TV music awards, and in the last month of his life his new band 'Long Story Short' won awards at their Rock Quest Regional Final.

At his funeral, his math's teacher of three years made the tribute, "Some people come into our lives, leave footprints on our heart, and we are never the same again".

Cam is survived by his parents Nigel & Liz (who are both Paediatric Specialists working at Starship Hospital in Auckland), and his sisters Rosie, Hannah, and Francesca.
